Of ik een lezing wilde houden in de Agnietenkapel in Gouda. We spraken een thema af: De positie van de mens tussen grootheid en kleinheid in. Het thema vormde een goede opstap verder te denken over geloof en religie. Wat betekent religie voor mij? Wat beweer ik als ik zeg dat ik geloof? Wat weet, ken, claim ik dan dat anderen, niet-gelovigen, niet voor hun rekening willen of kunnen nemen. Kort voor de lezing at ik bij een vriend. Volgend jaar zijn we vijftig jaar bevriend. We komen uit hetzelfde gereformeerde milieu. Hij heeft het geloof opgeborgen. Ik niet. Hij wilde weten waarom ik nog geloofde en vooral wát ik dan toch geloofde. Niet om het me moeilijk te maken, maar uit een nieuwsgierigheid die half persoonlijk, half wetenschappelijk was – hij is van huis uit cultureel antropoloog. Hij en ik denken over zo veel dingen gelijk gestemd. Wat heb ik dan dat hij niet heeft? Ik kon hem slechts zoekend en tastend antwoord geven. Maar het hielp me bij de laatste voorbereiding voor mijn Goudse lezing, die hieronder volgt.
